Tucked away in the rolling hills above Ambleside, Grove Barn is more than just a café it’s a place to relax, unwind, and savour the beauty of the Lake District. Whether you’re walking up Stock Ghyll Force, spotting us from the top of Wansfell Pike, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Grove Barn offers warmth, flavour, and a moment of pause.
Grove Barn is brought to life by owner and Langdale Valley resident Anna.
Inspired by her Italian roots in the Valle d’Aosta and a career spent in some of the UK’s best
hospitality settings, Anna has created a space where food, landscape and community come together.
What began as a lovingly restored barn by Grove Farm’s Max and Lynda Howard, the café provides respite and inspiration, rooted in nature, community and good food.
Our menu is simple, seasonal, and made with care. From daily homemade focaccia and indulgent Italian gelato to hearty classics and walkers’ favourites, everything is crafted using the finest local ingredients. A taste of Anna’s Italian heritage shines through too – don’t miss the family’s famous spare ribs, cooked to a secret recipe.
Whether it’s a refreshing cup of tea, a pint of local beer, or a plate of something delicious, Grove Barn is all about food that nourishes body and soul.
Grove Barn is planning a year-round programme of events to serve both our local community and visiting guests. From seasonal celebrations to intimate gatherings, we’ll be opening our doors to moments worth sharing. Full details will be announced soon – watch this space.
Surrounded by 160 acres of inbye hill farm, Grove Barn sits in a landscape where conservation and nature thrive. Roe deer, native cattle, hares, and birdlife roam freely, creating a backdrop that feels both wild and welcoming.
This is a place to pause, to reconnect with nature and to enjoy the unspoilt beauty of Cumbria.
